Excerpt

They could lay there and trace constellations out of the sky until the universe ran out of mysteries and never be bored of each other's company.

She had seen mankind at its ugliest, but still managed to find him beautiful.

But dawn was coming. The dawn of a new world, a new creation. Mankind would never experience this world.

Their own making, she thought. She felt no remorse for the species.

He turned to face her at the exact same moment she turned to face him. The simple action performed simultaneously had almost been enough to make her stay.

She hated the ambivalence.

"Goodbye," she whispered, as she leaned over to kiss his forehead.

He stared at her.

When she looked back, his eyes were no longer on her, but instead on sky.

"See you later," he said almost casually.
